The Ethics and Chemistry of Food and Cooking
Description/Reflection
Paragraph 1: Describe the project (what we did in both classes)
In our humanities and Chemistry class we worked with food. In Humanities we looked at food ethics and began to form our own throughout the project. In Chemistry we looked at the science of food and had to create an experiment based on a chemical component for example I wanted to know how changing the amount of flour you put in a batch of cookies affected the density of the cookies.
Paragraph 2: How did the interdisciplinary nature of this project impact your learning?
It was more interesting to learn about the way we grow and eat our food and seeing the science side of things. Holding all of this information in gave more insights on the ways as a country we eat because of the chemicals we consume from different food products.
Paragraph 3: What are your main takeaways from studying food academically? How has your thinking about food changed from before?
My main takeaway is that we need to change the way we eat because of the food we are constantly consuming. My way of thinking was much more not caring and just eating what was put in front of me but after reading and watching documentaries on what our livestock and other forms of food we eat is filled with makes me more conscious on what to eat in the future. I don’t want to keep eating the same way and other people really shouldn’t eat that same way either.
