Reflection
We were given the opportunity as 9th graders to design our own version of the school campus. We had to do empathy interviews and see what people wanted for their version of the school. After our empathy interviews we collaborated with our group and discussed what our school should be from our interviews. After that we designed what we want our school to look like with the people we interviewed insights and our own wants. With this information we designed our school campus.
I gained more skills in Sketchup by creating my groups blueprint of the second floor and reshaping the bottom floor. By using Sketchup I learned how to design building accurately. I also learned that these programs can be very difficult to use and won’t always cooperate the way you’d wish. When you are creating a building to scale you should check the numbers of the width before you decide to make your Sketchup design because it could turn out to be too big or small. Finally I learned that it can be fun to build these types of structures if sketchup wants to be cooperative.
It was very difficult to collaborate with my group because we are all introverts, meaning that we’re quiet. I would have spoken more with my group on what needs to be accomplished that day. I think that I did work fairly well with my group but we didn’t communicate very well. With our design of our 3d model of our building I didn’t have anything to work on so I started using Sketchup. We all had opinion’s in what was done for our project and what was next but once someone started working we all just did our own thing.
I do think it is important for kids to have a voice in what their school should look like because this will hopefully have kids not see a prison when they see a school. When a student gets an opinion on what a school should look like it also lets you know their interests in school and classes they want. In my group we have people who enjoy music so we have a music room in some of our rough drafts of the school. Another reason why I think this is important is because my group thought that having something like a home ecc room is important for learning how to cook and sew and other life skills you’ll need in your home life. This is important because if a student gets to draw up his version of the school and pieces of it are is used that student knows his or her voice is being heard.
