In this project, we learned about the hero’s journey. The hero’s journey is a template that a man named Joseph Campbell came up in the 20th century. The hero’s journey follows the idea that every story has the protagonist go through these steps, The Call, Crossing the exit threshold, The road of trials and temptations, The Abyss, The transformation, The apotheosis, Crossing the return threshold, and The return to the community. With these steps, we read then analyzed a story called The Alchemist and how the main character Santiago goes through the 8 steps of the hero’s journey. After reading The Alchemist I had gained a new knowledge that any ordinary person can have their own hero’s journey because Santiago was just a measly shepherd that had a dream to tell him where to find treasure and he eventually decided to follow his dreams (literally) and go on his adventure.
I feel like I have grown from when we were deciding to tell our stories because when we first started coming up with our idea’s I remember not wanting to tell mine at all and thinking that it wasn’t good. When we had to share our stories with the class I had to ask if could go in a smaller group because I was just so nervous. From when it started to when it ended I think my story got much stronger from a lot of refinement. The biggest thing to me about these stories is that I wish I actually told my story in front of the class or put my name in the hat to tell it at our exhibition.
An understanding I will take away from this project is how many times we really do go through the hero’s journey in our lives even if it doesn’t follow every step. It could be anything from having a rainbow dress when society may not like that, to having a family member die and how you live with that and look back on their life. I believe this because every story you tell can represent a dark moment and how you look on the bright side or loving something that you would be embarrassed to let anyone see. It’s not what the story talks about it’s what the person telling the story did to go through that moment.
